With end of year business, holiday festivities and a trip to NYC during the week of Christmas, I rolled up to yoga class yesterday feeling like it was the last place I should be.
Funny enough, the intention the instructor set for class was to remember to take time for yourself, especially during the holiday season. AKA: put the oxygen mask on first before assisting others. You’re doing EVERYONE a favor when you focus on your needs because burnout is NO fun, trust me.
On that note, I thought now would be an appropriate time to share my morning routine!
Let’s get one thing out of the way. I am the WORST morning person you’ll ever meet and I require a lot of sleep. For this reason, I set up my life so that I start work later (10 AM) and work longer into the evening.
Even though I am not a morning person, I know that starting the day off right is SO incredibly important. I like to wake up easy, take things slow and make sure I’m giving attention to my mind, body & soul.
MY MORNING SELF CARE ROUTINE:
Set The Tone:
When I wake up around 8 AM, I make it a point not to check my phone, computer or tv for at least an hour. I don’t want the energy of others, which can often be pretty negative, to effect my own.
Hydration & Caffeination
The first thing I do is get up and make hot lemon water + Nespresso coffee (my favorites are currently banana bread & pumpkin spice). While I’m waiting for these two drinks, I usually down an 8 oz glass of water. When you sleep your body slowly becomes dehydrated. Drinking lots of water when you wake rehydrates, starts your metabolism and flushes toxins.
Soul Session:
Next it’s back to bed with my coffee! I like to stay cozied up in bed with my dog for an hour. I take this time to…
- Write in my Five Minute Journal, which is a gratitude practice that helps set a positive tone for my day.
- Meditate for 10-20 minutes & practice my visualizations/affirmations (another blog post on this soon).
- Afterwards I’ll read a chapter or two of my book, which is usually focused on personal growth. Right now I’m reading Awakening Your Life’s Purpose by Eckart Tolle.
Body:
I usually schedule my workouts around 9-9:30 AM so it gets done in the morning, but not too early! If I’m not doing a NakedNourished workout, I do yoga or pilates class!
After my workout I usually snag my second coffee and then it’s back to my home office for breakfast and emails!
What are some of your own self-care techniques? I’d love to hear about them–comment below! I am also SO intrigued by morning people.
