I’ve always loved to investigate how things work and research to figure out how to do just about anything I put my mind to. So, it’s no surprise I filled my Amazon cart with lots of pregnancy and motherhood reads shortly after learning I was pregnant.
While I am a very intuitive person and I believe and trust that many answers will come from within, I wanted to explore a few different parenting philosophies so that I could take the little nuggets that resonated with me from each book.
Below are some of my favorite pregnancy books and why I loved them:
Bringing Up Bebe by Pamela Druckerman
This was the first book I read while pregnant and I flew through it in a matter of days! The author takes an in-depth look at the French parenting style to uncover why it is that French children sleep through the night at 2-3 months old, eat what’s served to them and entertain themselves (so their parents can enjoy adult conversation). Somehow they do so without losing the essence of creativity, discovery and the art of being a kid. This philosophy is #ParentingGoals for sure.
Nurture: A Modern Guide to Pregnancy, Birth, Early Motherhood – and Trusting Yourself and Your Body by Erica Chidi Cohen
I opted to read Nurture instead of “What To Expect When You’re Expecting” because it felt a bit more holistic and updated. It’s a great guide to your pregnancy as it breaks down what you and your baby are experiencing each trimester. I also LOVED the special focus on diet, clean beauty, wellness and meditation.
The Happiest Baby On The Block by Harvey Karp
This book explores how to quickly and effectively calm your baby by mimicking the environment in the womb via the 5 S’s: Swaddle, Side-Stomach Position, Shush, Swing and Suck. Although it was a very interesting, quick and easy read…I recommend watching the video if you’re short on time. The video is basically a CliffsNotes version of the book plus it SHOWS you how to perfect the 5’s.
The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding by Diane Wiessinger, Diana West, & Teresa Pitman
This book is by no means “light” reading but it’s one of the most comprehensive and well reviewed books on everything you could ever want to know about breastfeeding. I found myself taking tons of notes and marking pages to reference in the future. Although I’m taking a BF class in a few weeks, this was an AWESOME self-study.
