UPDATE:
When I wrote this post back in 2018 I was pregnant with my first baby. 10 minutes on the StairMaster was the most I could do with a bulging belly!
Now postpartum I’ve since worked my way up to 20-25 minutes on the StairMaster and the results are nothing short of incredible!
It’s the fastest way I’ve found to tone the legs, lift the booty and shred inches quickly.
To make your time on the StairMaster even more challenging consider:
- Wearing ankle weights. I LOVE these by Bala (also available here)
- Lifting a medicine ball over your head for 1-2 minute intervals.
- Climb up the stairs sideways for a minute, before switch to the other side for another minute to target the inner/outer thigh. I like to alternate legs for 8-10 minutes.

You guys, nothing will humble you more than 10 minutes on the StairMaster.
It doesn’t matter if I’m in the best shape of my life (hello wedding bod) or 37 weeks preggo, this bad boy will show you who’s boss! If your knees and joints are sensitive it’s also a great alternative to running.
I love to start ALL my gym workouts with just 10 minutes on the StairMaster. It doesn’t sound like much but you’ll be screaming to get off at the end, I promise!
Afterwards I’ll do some weights or my other favorite pregnancy workouts. Sometimes if I don’t feel like working out at all, I’ll force myself to get those 10 minutes in on the StairMaster and I feel super accomplished.
If you want to shred lbs FAST, the StairMaster is the way to go! Not only do I sweat like a sinner in church, but the fat seriously seems to just melt off and it tones your legs and booty like none other.
If you’re not preggers and want to make this even harder, hold a medicine ball overhead or wear ankle weights. These tweaks are not for the faint of heart. Work your way up by holding the medicine ball over head for 1-2 minute intervals and giving yourself a rest in between.

My trainer recommend the stairmaster and I found your recommendation by looking up workouts..I just did 10 minutes and a 3 minute cool down.. I thought you were exaggerating!! Goodness that was so difficult!! This will definitely be a love/hate relationship

I’m 7 months pregnant and I feel the same. Just made it to 8 min. Increasing the intensity. It’s the best thing I’ve found in this pregnancy.
babeskills says
YAY I am so glad you’re finding it helpful! Congrats on the baby!!
Ana says
Is there a certain speed that you go?
babeskills says
I typically like to go around 8 and work my way up to 10!

I barely did 5 minutes, then I picked dancable classic rock n disco to to hit it hard. Worked my way up to an hour in a year. Lost weight. My calves bulge. I feel so young!!
babeskills says
That is great! I need to switch on some disco!

I saw someone at the gym side-stepping on the Stairmaster and I thought it was genius! Try rotating one minute stepping straight ahead, then one minute sidestepping on the right, another minute center, next minute sidestepping on the left, back to center, and continue. I do 12 minutes with a one minute cool down and adding the sidestepping really added to the workout! My legs felt it for sure.
babeskills says
OMG yes!!! I started the side step and it’s soooo good. I love how it gets the nook and cranny muscles!!
Karen says
Where do you get that fabulous stair master for purchase?
babeskills says
Hi Karen–this was at my gym–I didn’t purchase it. Thought I would love one!
Ashley says
Hey,
What intensity do you have it set at for 10 mins?
babeskills says
Hi! I try and do between 8-10 intensity! I defiantly had to build my stamina to get there.
