Lately I’ve been treating myself to restorative yoga sessions every Sunday. This is WAY less of a workout and more of a “get yo mind right” type class. Along with re-centering your thoughts, the restorative poses bring your body back into it’s natural alignment.
It’s a great way to let the stress of the previous week melt away, induce DEEP relaxation and set the tone for Monday.
The feeling after class is basically euphoric and I’m addicted.
Today, I wanted to share a simple yet powerful restorative yoga pose that you can do at home–no prior yogi experience required.
The “legs up the wall,” or Viparita Karani pose, is said to “”destroy old age and death”. Ummm, sign me up.
This pose is so great for the health of your heart! It gives your heart a rest, so it doesn’t have to pump as hard. This slows down your heart rate and induces deep relaxation.
To try the “legs up the wall” pose at home: cozy up to the nearest wall and just breathe. Try to clear your mind of it’s chatter and focus on your breath. I like to stay in the pose for at least 5 minutes ( I like to do 15). My favorite time to practice this pose is just before bed and it’s also great to unwind and destress from a travel day.
Benefits of the “legs up the wall pose”:
- Sends blood flow to your core
- Improves digestion
- Eases stress
- Calms the nervous system
- Reduces mentral cramps
- Induces sleep
- Relieves headaches
- Relieves swollen ankles and varicose veins
Oh and can we talk about these ADORABLE leggings from Puppies Make Me Happy? They are SO soft and bring a smile to my face every time I wear them. Not just because they look cute, but because proceeds are donated to non-profits that help pups!
