I’ve trained myself to be positive and to try to see the good in everything. While I am aware life can’t be “good vibes only” ALL of the time, I try not to let myself get worked up over trivial “first world problems” and reserve my energy for things that really matter.
That said, try as I might to resist a bad mood, I recently found myself in a major funk. Let me paint a picture for you…
A few days ago my teething baby woke up at 4:30 AM…FOR THE DAY. I was exhausted, had a horrible attitude and knew I’d require at least 2-3 cups of coffee to function. To make matters worse I was majorly PMSing (just keeping it real).
As the morning progressed Gino, utterly exhausted himself, wouldn’t eat his breakfast and fought his nap so hard. At the same time, I had work emails piling up and a “crisis” requiring my immediate attention. Cue the anxiety attack.
When I finally got around to making breakfast for myself, my over easy egg was about to break. I looked at it and said, out loud, don’t f#$% with me and guess what…It didn’t.
Looking forward to having a full cup of coffee uninterrupted by my napping baby, I anxiously put a pod in my Nespresso machine and walked away to tidy up the living room. I returned to find the cup tipped over with coffee dripping all over the counter, down to my cabinets and in a puddle on the floor.
I knew right then I had a choice to make.
I could be pissed off, continue my day in a horrible mood and probably attract more of the bad stuff OR I could shift my attitude, raise my vibration and turn this day around.
As I started to clean up the mess I reminded myself that I had been meaning to move the coffee machine and give the counters and cabinets a really good cleaning anyways.
Afterwards, I promptly took my booty upstairs and sat in meditation for 15 minutes. Following that, I wrote in my favorite gratitude journal and when I emerged from my room I felt lighter. There was defianately an energetic shift.
From that point forward, I continued to be kind to myself. On the way to the grocery store I listened to my favorite podcast, bought myself flowers and a really nice bottle of wine. As I continued to focus on the things that light me up, the rest of my day progressed without a hitch.
I know we can all find ourselves in a self loathing downward spiral from time to time, so I wanted to share my process for pulling yourself out of a rut!
How To Raise Your Vibration To Turn Around A Bad Day:
- Acknowledge you’re having a hard time–honor it and then intend to move on.
- Spin the negative into a positive–for example, I reminded myself not to stress about the coffee and that I had been meaning to deep clean that area of the kitchen anyways.
- Practice mindfulness–had I not been multi-tasking, the coffee likely wouldn’t have been spilled in the first place. It was a good reminder to be present and do things with intention.
- Go inward–meditation helps curb my anxiety and is a total reset button. If meditation isn’t in your practice just take a few minutes to sit with your eyes closed and B R E A T H E.
- Dwell in gratitude–-life isn’t always perfect but there’s always so much to be grateful for. I try and remember that there is someone out there who would love to have my struggles (see: How To Stop Complaining and Be More Grateful).
- Do something that makes you happy— go for a walk outside, read a chapter of a new book, order takeout if you hate cooking or do something else that you know lights you up!
