Full disclosure, I was intending to share my favorite sunglass trends for 2017 with the help of my friend Dr. Joanna Slusky at Halsted Eye Boutique. She carries some the BEST brands, think Dita and Tom Ford, which can be customized based on your vision needs.
However, that plan took a turn when Dr. Slusky offered me an eye exam. I obliged even though I thought it was completely unnecessary since I’ve always had PERFECT vision.
Um, you guys…not only did I discover my vision was declining, but I also have irreversible SUN damage (something my skin is no stranger to) and chronic dry eye. Glasses, eye drops & UV-Blocking sunnies, man…getting old is fun!
I haven’t had an eye exam in about 10 years and I’m now realizing what a mistake that was. Even if you have perfect vision, you need a yearly eye exam because it’s like a mini physical. A digital scan of your eyes can reveal underlying issues, like if you have high cholesterol, certain cancers and even a tumor. The best news of all? Thanks to a new technology called optomap, you can get a 3D scan of your eye WITHOUT needing to have your pupils dilated.
Because *eye* love you (sorry, had to) I wanted to spotlight the importance of the health of your eyes. It’s SO SO important to be proactive, not reactive.
Another factor that influences our vision is blue light which is the potentially harmful light emitted from smartphones, computers and tablets. Not only does blue light cause digital eye strain but it also messes with your melatonin production. SO if the last thing you do before bed is scroll through Instagram or binge watch Netflix, it’s probably the reason you’re having sleep issues.
Here are couple ways to combat blue light exposure:
- Keep “night shift” on your phone always
- Reduce the amount of time you spend staring at screens when possible and especially before bed
- If you wear glasses get blue light filtering lenses
Finally, last major tip I want to leave you with is with regard to your sunnies! You want to make SURE the sunglasses you buy are UV block 400. The brands you find at Nordstrom don’t typically offer this protection so it’s best to see your eye doctor for your next designer sunglass splurge.
